23 weeks pregnant: kicks and countdown

My baby daughter Aara turns 23 weeks today in my belly.  I have been semi wincing at her steady kicks to celebrate since morning. It is such a joy to feel her move...my dolphin like baby who squirms after anytime after I've eaten or am happy. When and if I get angry or sad (as a result of turbulent hormones) she stops moving as if frightened.

The highlights of week 23 is that my breasts have started leaking a clear premilk (which is not yet colostrum) and I have also started to stimulate Aara -- which means if I stroke my belly or speak to her, she has learnt to kick me a re...

Is it safe to get a manicure while I'm pregnant?

While chronic exposure to the solvents used in manicure salons (like the acetone in polish remover and the toluene in nail polish) isn't good for you, having one manicure every couple of weeks is probably not a danger, as long as you make sure the salon has good ventilation.

There's little or no evidence that a pregnant woman's exposure to the chemicals involved in a manicure or pedicure is harmful to the fetus. A pedicure in particular can be a wonderful thing in late pregnancy when you're having trouble reaching your toes even to clip your nails.

Given the heightened se...

Is it safe to wear high heels when I'm pregnant?

Yes, but it may not be comfortable. And as you get further along in the pregnancy you'll probably want to go to a lower heel, because your center of gravity will be constantly changing and walking in heels will be harder to manage. Usually at about 25 weeks I recommend going to a lower heel, especially if you're having a lot of back pain.

Wearing high heels (even wide-based, clunky ones) is not a good idea during pregnancy. That's because your weight increases and your body shape and center of gravity change, making you walk differently (and less steadily). A fall during pregnanc...

Is it safe to bleach my body hair during pregnancy?

I'm not aware of any scientific studies of products that might potentially be absorbed through the skin. This would require measuring the absorption, and because no two people have the same skin characteristics, the rate of absorption would be different for each person.

Since there's no way to know if bleaching body hair is safe, I recommend that you delay bleaching until after you have your baby.

To my knowledge, there's no evidence that the use of topically applied bleach increases the risk of birth defects, though this issue hasn't been well studied. Most likely, very ...

Traditional beliefs and rituals around pregnancy in Bangladesh

Pregnancy and the arrival of a new baby is an exciting and life changing time for the parents and their families. Most cultures have many traditional beliefs and rituals involving this special time.  This article will describe some of these rituals and beliefs that are prevalent in Bengali culture

One popular belief in Bangladesh and many other countries is that the shape of the expectant mother’s tummy can give away the sex of the baby. It is believed that if the bump is mostly on the front and quite lo...

Have a baby and look hot too! Pilates – an important part of a healthy lifestyle

Hello Mama!
Having a baby may be life’s most amazing experience but the aftermath, the battle to lose 30 pounds, is no ballgame! As if it’s not bad enough that you have to deal with 10 months of gaining weight, not fitting into clothes, waddling around like ducks, back aches, restless leg syndrome, infinite pee breaks throughout the night, just when you’re ready to be unbearably light, just when the excruciatingly painful labour of love has been pushed out, you’re left to discover with much disappointment and horror, that your tummy looks just about as big a...
