Week 9
How your baby's growing
Baby is now the size of a green olive and is officially a foetus (no longer an embryo). An ultrasound scan now might be able to pick up the beating heart. With her basic physical structures in place and increasingly distinct facial features baby is starting to look like a baby! This week the irises of baby's little eyes can function, but her eyelids still remain fused shut. Her external ears are formed and his inner ears are now filled with fluid, so your baby is already developing a sense of balance.
How your life's changing
Physically you're unlikely to look pregnant unless this pregnancy isn't your first, but you may feel very tired and sick - not necessarily in the mornings - so cosset yourself. Pregnancy hormones can also play havoc in other ways. Many women suffer from painful headaches and back problems such as sciatica and, unfortunately, these hormones also help make the perfect environment for vaginal thrush. Whatever your particular pregnancy bugbear, follow our suggestions for natural remedies you can try. Staying active can mean a healthier pregnancy and a faster recovery after the birth. Don't overdo it though and do check the do's and don'ts of exercising and avoid getting to too hot. It's early days, but how you sit and the activities that you choose to do in pregnancy can make all the difference in helping your baby to get into a good position for birth. It's a good idea to start thinking about these things now so that you can get into good habits.
Parent tip: calcium without the calories
"Since I got pregnant I've been making an effort to eat well and to drink more milk but I've swapped to semi-skimmed to stop the calories mounting up. You get all the calcium you need without the extra fat." - Mithila. Share your tips below or you can discuss with others on maya voice.

Things to consider
Screening for Down's syndrome can be given now between the 8th and 14th week.
If you're having a chorionic villus screening test (CVS test) it's usually carried out in the next week or so. Please make sure you go through Maya's antenatal appointment reminders to see if you are on top of your appointments with your doctors. Is it safe to take Prozac during pregnancy?

I've been happy to find your article about screening for down syndrome before the baby is born. This is something I've been worried about, having a baby that is handicapped. :( Sorry if that sounds bad but I don't think I can handle that if it happens to me!A girl I know has been using Sciatica Treatments that she found online to stretch her sore leg from pregnancy pains, but I was wondering if doing stretches while pregnant may cause harm to a baby.
