Babies Up to Nine Months Old

Invest in some books with pull-up flaps. By this age, she will become quite adept at lifting the flap to see what is underneath.

By now, your baby will begin to love games that involve building. Bricks of different sizes are ideal for this, as are stackable cups that fit inside each other.

'Put-in' and 'take-out' toys are great at this age. Fill a container with different objects, such as an old mobile phone, a small rubber duck, a piece of felt or a rattle and help her take out and explore the objects. Show her how to put them back again.

It is around this time your baby will start to be on the move.Create an obstacle course on the floor using cushions and encourage her to climb over them by dangling a toy in front of her or peeping out from behind them. This will develop body strength, balance and coordination.

Build strength in her leg muscles by holding her hand for support as she takes steps forward. Invest in
a walker to build on this but make sure it has a wide base for greater balance.

Your baby should be clapping her hands together now. Develop this by singing "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands", encouraging her to clap with you.

To help develop her pincer grasp, fill a small plastic cup with ice and give baby an empty one. Drop one ice cube in her cup and encourage her to pick it up using the pincer grasp. This is great at bath-time. Try giving her an ice cube and showing her how to drop it into the water or back into your cup.
